It's definitely fall

Ever since the time changed this weekend, it's really felt like fall.

Night is falling sooner, that autumnal combination of darkening skies and glowing windows is more noticeable, and it's getting chillier.

My mother once said that when they first moved here in the early Sixties, they found autumn very disconcerting: it wasn't dramatic enough or cold enough, compared to what they had been accustomed to in West Virginia, and they felt a little abandoned by Nature. Personally, I think that while it's not exactly the Berkshires, the fall here is in fact noticeable.

I write about people, technology, and the worlds they make.

I'm a senior consultant at Strategic Business Insights, a Menlo Park, CA consulting and research firm. I began thinking seriously about contemplative computing in the winter of 2011 while a Visiting Researcher in the Socio-Digital Systems Group at Microsoft Research, Cambridge. I wanted to figure out how to design information technologies and user experiences that promote concentration and deep focused thinking, rather than distract you, fracture your attention, and make you feel dumb. My book on contemplative computing, The Distraction Addiction, will be published by Little, Brown and Company in 2013. (It will also appear in Dutch and Russian.)

My books
