My home network

Last week I bought a second AirPort Express station. The wifi doesn't extend out to the garage, and I can't run a second cable modem out there. I figured that the only thing I could do was buy another Express, run some Ethernet cable to the window, and mount it there, so the signal would run out to the garage.

Turns out the Express can work as a repeater: it can pick up and rebroadcast an existing wifi signal. Somehow I missed this fact.

So rather than spend an evening running a cable along the top of the wall, I just spent two minutes configuring the thing (the AirPort setup wizard even detected both stations, asked if I wanted to configure a network with the new one as a repeater), and bam! it was done. It's now in the laundry room.

As for the garage, I've got four beautiful bars out there now. As strong a signal as I'd have in the living room.

There are time when I really love Apple.
