MarsEdit vs. Ecto
I've been a fan of Ecto for some time, and have been impressed at how it's gotten better with each release. I've also been a big fan of NetNewsWire, without which I wouldn't be able to keep track of a fraction of the blogs I follow.
So I was interested to see that Ranchero, the people who make NetNewsWire, had released their own stand-alone blog editor, MarsEdit. Earlier releases of NetNewsWire have had a blog editor, which I've occasionally used, but haven't really loved; now Ranchero is pursuing a strategy of differentiating the two pieces of software, but still having them work together.
So how do they compare?
For extended posts I like Ecto better. It's more powerful, and generally feels more finished.
However, for writing quick posts talking about things I'm reading, MarsEdit's bookmarklet is better. Ecto constructs a fairly complicated post, while MarsEdit puts together something quite a bit simpler. I'm sure that if I knew some Javascript I could tweak the Ecto bookmarklet to work the way I want, but for now, I'm running both.
