One of the principal reasons I moved up to OS X was to be able to access iTunes, and to find various ancient songs that I hadn't heard in the last 20 years. I've had pretty good success tracking down some pretty obscure things-- though Manfred Mann's "Blinded by the Light" is nowhere to be found-- but I've had a real surprise in the course of rediscovering this music.
When I was young, I always had pretty lousy stereo equipment-- often just a portable AM/FM radio, or a $39 stereo from K-Mart-- and it turns out that, even though I heard some of these songs a thousand times, there was a lot of detail I missed. Now I hear it. Twenty years later.
[To the tune of Bryan Ferry, "The Right Stuff," from the album Bete Noire.]
