I'm always struck whenever I go back to Virginia-- I almost typed "home"-- at how verdant it is. How the Hell the Jamestown settlers managed to starve was always a mystery to me-- a singular accomplishment more impressive to a 6th grader (when I first heard about the settlement in history class) than the revolution, writing the constitution, etc..

In their defense, there was a drought the years they arrived, so it may not have been quite so green....
